AppLovin’s $40 Billion Wake-Up Call: When a 53% Growth Rate Isn’t Enough

The arithmetic of artificial-intelligence-era investing can be brutal. Just ask AppLovin, whose second-quarter earnings report triggered the most violent sell-off in the company’s history — a move that erased roughly $40 billion in market value within hours, despite revenue growth that most businesses would frame and hang on the wall.

The advertising-technology firm reported quarterly revenue of $1.92 billion, up 53 percent year over year and 4 percent sequentially. Adjusted EBITDA climbed 58 percent to $1.61 billion, with margins expanding roughly 300 basis points. Earnings came in at $3.77 per share on a GAAP basis and $3.76 diluted, while free cash flow reached $863.3 million. The company also repurchased approximately 1.14 million shares for $551 million during the quarter, leaving about $1.8 billion remaining under its buyback authorization.

Yet the market’s reaction was anything but celebratory. The stock plunged as much as 28.7 percent in after-hours trading Wednesday, sliding from the regular-session close of $417.80 to $350.09. The culprit: revenue came in roughly $16.3 million shy of the $1.94 billion consensus, and management conceded that anticipated improvements to its AXON advertising model never materialized during the period.

A Timing Problem, Not a Demand Problem

CEO Adam Foroughi sought to frame the shortfall as a matter of sequencing rather than softening advertiser demand. The company’s next major model upgrade went live shortly after the quarter ended, he explained on the earnings call, and the third quarter is already off to a strong start.

The guidance supports that narrative. AppLovin is projecting third-quarter revenue between $2.055 billion and $2.085 billion, representing 46 to 48 percent growth year over year, with adjusted EBITDA of $1.71 billion to $1.74 billion. Management also pointed to consumer-sector advertiser spending running 28 percent above fourth-quarter 2025 levels at the end of the period, and noted that e-commerce ad spend hit a record in Q2, surpassing the previous peak set during the 2025 holiday season. The June opening of the self-serve AppLovin Ads platform to all advertisers worldwide — previously invite-only since its October 2025 launch — adds another growth lever.

The stock has stabilized somewhat since the initial shock. Friday brought a 3.04 percent gain to EUR 299.90, though that came after the shares touched a fresh 52-week low of EUR 288.05 on August 6. The weekly decline stands at 12.64 percent, the 30-day drop at 34.35 percent, and the year-to-date loss at 49.53 percent. The equity now sits just 4.11 percent above that recent low.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Applovin?

Wall Street Splits on the AI Story

The analyst response on Thursday revealed a house divided. Wells Fargo’s Alec Brondolo downgraded the stock from “Overweight” to “Equal-Weight” and slashed his price target from $575 to $357, citing a potential “plateau” in AppLovin’s mobile gaming ad market share — the company now commands roughly half of that segment’s ad spending. BofA’s Omar Dessouky, by contrast, maintained his “Buy” rating while cutting his target from $705 to $430. BTIG kept its “Top Pick” designation and buy recommendation but trimmed its target from $640 to $574.

In between, Goldman Sachs, RBC Capital, Needham, Macquarie, Scotiabank, Oppenheimer, and Piper Sandler all pulled their price targets back to a range of $357 to $620. The common thread: skepticism about how quickly the delayed model improvements will translate into measurable results.

Insider Selling and Institutional Divergence

The ownership picture adds another layer of complexity. Insider selling has been relentless — trading data shows 400 open-market sales over the past six months with zero purchases, including 48 transactions by manager Eduardo Vivas alone. Institutional behavior is more mixed: IEQ Capital slashed its position by 98.9 percent in the first quarter of 2026, while FMR added 19.9 percent and Capital International Investors expanded its stake by 187.8 percent.

Regulatory Closure and a Changing Leadership Team

Amid the turmoil, one piece of genuinely positive news went largely unnoticed. The SEC informed AppLovin that it had closed its investigation into the company’s data practices — opened in October 2025 following a sealed whistleblower complaint — without recommending any further action. CFO Matt Stumpf welcomed the resolution.

The company is also refreshing its executive ranks. Giovanni Ge steps in as Chief Technology Officer, Corina Cacovean becomes Chief Legal Officer following Victoria Valenzuela’s retirement on August 1, and Craig Billings has been appointed independent chairman of the board.

With net leverage at just 0.1 times trailing twelve-month adjusted EBITDA, the balance sheet leaves ample room for continued buybacks. The question now is whether the market’s patience — already tested by a 49.53 percent year-to-date decline — will hold until the next earnings report validates the AI upgrade thesis. For a stock whose valuation rests entirely on flawless execution, the margin for error has rarely felt thinner.
